The Story

The story has started 14 million years ago.

Volcanic activities created unique geological formations. This special mineral vine growing area creates possibility to produce the finest white wines of the world.

The base rocks are various depending on the circumstances of the eruptions. The cracks of rhyolite, andesite, dacite, medium and hard tuff bedrocks are filled with clay minerals. The area is rich in naturally formed zeolite, bentonite and kaolinite. The individual vineyards therefore have different minerality.

1500s - members of the Szepsy family have produced wines in Tokaj region as early as the 1500s.The winemaker of the Szent Tamás Vineyards and Winery is Szepsy István Jr 18th generation wine producer.

1631 - pastor Szepsy Laczkó Máté made the first Aszú wine with new maceration method.

1732 - the first quality based single vineyard classification in the world. Our vineyards Szent Tamás, Percze, Nyulászó, Kővágó and Király were declared First Growth in the classification of Tokaj made by J. Matolai.

1737 - Tokaj declared a delimited wine region by royal decree with Tokaj as the official name of the region.

17th - 19th century - the first Golden age of the Tokaj wine region. Worldwide recognition of the wines of Tokaj. King Louis XIV said about the Aszú wine:"The wine of kings and the king of wines."

2000s - the dry Furmint wines of Mád village by the Szepsy Winery achieve worldwide recognition, after Szepsy István Sr already known as "the Aszú king".

2009 - Szent Tamás Vineyards and Winery established. The owners set the aim to produce unique wines from the vineyards of Mád village that represent the true character of the terroir.

2011 - The first village level dry furmint has born. The grapes for Mad Furmint are integrated from various vineyards of the village. Today the healthy Furmint bunches are sourced from 26 vineyards to present the mineral character of the growing area.
